aperture An adjustable iris in a camera lens that controls how much light passes through the lens to the image sensor. Aperture sizes are stated in f-stop numbers and written as f/2.8, f/4, and so on. A smaller f-stop number indicates a larger opening and greater light transmission, for a brighter exposure. Aperture also affects depth of field (focus zone); the larger the aperture, the shorter the depth of field.
